Joining Us
Here, we've answered some of the most common questions about how to join Stage School Australia.
How do we join?
Enrolment begins with an audition or trial class where recommendation for group is made. These sessions offer a chance for students to experience how our classes are run first hand prior to enrolling. Afterward, families receive an Offer with details on fees, dates, and requirements.
How do I book an audition?
Booking is easy! Audition bookings can be made via our website. Simply head to the members portal to make an account and choose the best time that suits you. Alternatively, you can book over the phone by calling our Head Office team.
How do I book a Trial Class?
Trial Classes are subject to availability, so bookings can only be made via phone call.
Can we join at any time?
Intakes for our programs open every 6-months. New students can join Stage School either at the beginning of the year, or mid-year.
Does everyone need to audition?
Yes, everyone interested in enrolling will need to attend an audition or trial class. These sessions are designed to be fun, relaxed, and give new students an insight into our weekly classes.
At what age can a student start?
Beginners OnStage (BOS) is designed for 4–7 year olds in Melbourne and 5–7 year olds in Brisbane.
The Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC) and the Australian Youth Theatre (AYT) cater for students aged 8–18.
Do students require previous experience?
Not at all. Many of our students join with no prior training, simply to build confidence and try something new.
Do you cater for experienced students?
Yes. Students with prior experience are encouraged to show us their ability during the audition process so we can place them in the most suitable group.
Could my child not be accepted?
Participating in an audition or trial doesn't guarantee enrolment. Occasionally we find that our classes are not a good fit for a student who has auditioned. Assessments are based on participation in these exercises and the student’s willingness and aptitude to develop these skills in our classes. Our commitment is to ensure that all students are given a fair and equal opportunity to succeed, this includes removing or not accepting students who would be highly disruptive to the learning of others.
What is the commitment involved?
Students are expected to attend all weekly rehearsals. Some classes may also have extra rehearsals to make up for missed classes due to public holidays, or Sunday workshops in the lead up to performances.
Weekly Classes
Here, we've answered some of the most common questions about our weekly classes.
How are the classes split?
Classes are split by birthdate, experience/skill, and program. Where possible, there is no more than a two-year age range between the oldest and youngest in a class.
How many students are in a class?
Classes average 18–20 students, with advanced levels sometimes larger.
What happens in a class?
Class content and structure vary depending on the program.
- Beginners OnStage and YABC classes are divided into three sessions: singing, dancing, and acting. Each session is led by a specialist teacher in that discipline. Students work on building skills in all three areas while learning songs, choreography, and acting techniques.
- AYT classes begin with a fun warm-up that connects to the skills focus for that day. The rest of the rehearsal is dedicated to developing core acting skills and working on scenes for their upcoming performance. AYT students work with the same teacher throughout the entire session.
Who are your teachers?
Our teachers are all industry professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds. From experienced and working actors to singers, leading choreographers and directors, our staff bring the best of the performing arts industry direct to our rehearsals. Many are even past students who have gone on to be successful in their chosen field! Additionally, all staff have a current Working with Children Check (Victoria) or Blue Card (Queensland).
How long are the classes?
Class duration ranging between 45mins - 1.5hrs for Beginners OnStage, and 1.5-3 hours for YABC and AYT depending on performance level.
What is 'Repertoire-Based Learning'?
Repertoire-based learning is a practical and engaging approach where students build their skills by working on real performance material—like songs, scenes, and dance routines.
Instead of only doing drills or isolated exercises, students learn through preparing actual pieces for performance. This helps them naturally develop technique, stage presence, timing, and confidence, all while having fun and working towards a goal.
Where are your classes?
We have over 30 venues located across Melbourne and Brisbane. See our locations page to find your local!
What should my child wear to class?
All students require a program-specific t-shirt. Beginners OnStage and YABC students also need black dance pants and jazz shoes (soft-soled). A uniform is also required at performances.
Course Hierarchy
Here, we've answered some of the most common questions about our course hierarchy.
The course hierarchy is specific to Stage School Australia classes and only applies to our Young Australian Broadway Chorus and Australian Youth Theatre programs.
What is a course hierarchy?
The course hierarchy at Stage School Australia outlines the different levels of training we offer. It helps ensure each student is placed in a class that suits their age, experience, and skill level.
What does 'Training Level' mean?
Training levels are the entry point of our course hierarchy.
Most students begin at this level after their initial audition. Training level students perform in one show each semester, giving them a great foundation in performance while building confidence and skills.
What does 'Performing Level' mean?
Performing levels are the next step up from Training.
Students at this level take on more challenging repertoire, and for YABC students, this includes tap dancing. Performing level students appear in a minimum of two shows each semester.
AYT students in this level will also attend an extra weekly rehearsal, making it two per week.
What does 'Advanced Performing Level' mean?
Advanced Performing levels are the next step up from Performing.
Students at this level are experienced performers. Their classes are longer in duration, and their content is much more advanced. Advanced Performing level students appear in a minimum of four shows each semester, with a select few having various tours and performance opportunities throughout the year.
AYT students in this level will continue to attend two weekly rehearsals.
How do students move up a level?
Progression is based on Rehearsal Director recommendations at the end of each semester. Students are always placed in the most appropriate class for their age and ability. It’s beneficial for students to begin in training level groups.
Do you have a course hierarchy in both Brisbane and Melbourne?
Yes! We currently offer all levels of training in Melbourne, and offer up to Show Chorus in Brisbane.
