About The Show
Shrek The Musical JR, a musical reimagining of the much-loved, Academy Award winning film Shrek, returns to Melbourne these July School Holidays for a limited season at the Cripps Centre, St Kilda East. Presented by the Young Australian Broadway Chorus, Shrek The Musical JR features hilarious characters, dazzling costumes, show stopping numbers, and is an affordable school holiday outing the whole family will love.
Shrek The Musical JR is the young performers adaptation of the Tony and Drama Desk Award winning hit Shrek The Musical. With music by Janine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical JR is based on the story and characters from Willian Steig’s 1990 book Shrek!, as well as the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, the first instalment of the movie series. Shrek The Musical first appeared on Broadway in 2008 with a star-studded cast of Broadway alumni including Sutton Foster, Brian d’Arcy James, and Christopher Sieber. The production was praised by USA Today as “…a triumph of comic imagination with a heart as big and warm as Santa’s…more family-friendly than that gag-fest.”.
The Young Australian Broadway Chorus, a division of Stage School Australia, has most recently presented seasons of Broadway hits Seussical (2023), Oliver! JR (2023), Spring Awakening (2023) CATS(2020), Les Misérables (2019) and Wicked (2018). This production marks 7 years since the company first produced Shrek The Musical JR. Stage Whispers wrote of the 2017 production: “as I have come to expect from this company… there were no weak links”.
Perfect for families and kids of all ages, this production was the highlight of the school holidays.
Here’s what the audience had to say:
