Prior to 1995 the company was only known as the Victorian Youth Theatre.
During this year the VYT presented a musical, Salad Days, as an end of year production featuring the entire school. From this it became apparent that many of the advanced students were keen to extend their musical theatre skills. As a result, in 1996, four musical theatre ensembles were created. This year concluded with a season of Godspell at the Gasworks Theatre.
Subsequent seasons included Man of La Mancha, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Oliver! and Rags.
In 1999, the musical theatre ensembles became the Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC). This year also saw the first of our musical theatre gala performances at the National Theatre.
In December 2008 the YABC celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special end of year show at the National Theatre. Excerpts from Rags, Salad Days, Godspell and Man of La Mancha were performed alongside other classic and modern musical theatre extracts.
In 2018, the YABC celebrated its 20th anniversary and 40th season at the National Theatre.
